The Drapers' Company
The Drapers’ Company became a corporate entity with perpetual succession and a common seal in 1438 when it received its first Charter of Incorporation. The current governing Royal Charter was granted in 1607 and the most recent Supplemental Charter was granted in 2008.
Philanthropic Role
The Company ceased its direct involvement in the drapery trade in the early 17th century and gained a new relevance by engaging in numerous philanthropic endeavours that survive to the present day. This relevance has been maintained through its role as the corporate trustee of a
number of charities
.
Commercial Role
The Company has a substantial endowment comprising various investment assets and a portfolio of freehold commercial properties primarily in the City of London, the income from which is used to support the Company’s activities. The properties owned by the Company include Drapers' Gardens, EC2 and a new office development at Mark Lane, EC3 as well as recently acquired assets in Lincolns’ Inn Fields and Clerkenwell.
