Before this staircase was built, the Small Drawing Room occupied the space which is now the landing. As the alterations of 1898 neared completion, the 5,000-piece chandelier was purchased to light the landing and a new carpet and furniture were commissioned from William Morris and Company.
The alabaster balustrade is lined with Ionic columns of Breccia marble. The walls are of Greek Cipollina, the doorcases of Emperors Red Marble.
